Don’t wait to renew your pesticide certification credential!

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is encouraging pesticide applicators with 2019 and 2020 expired credentials to renew their credential as soon as possible. Although a certification extension was granted until June 30, 2021, this deadline is fast approaching. As it approaches, we expect exam availability to become more limited. MDARD anticipates an unusually high number of applicators will need to take exams over the next few months due to underutilization of recertification opportunities. Applicators whose certification expired in 2019 and 2020 have limited time to obtain the necessary testing to renew. Exam opportunities fill up quickly and time is running out to reserve a seat.

Computer-Based Exams: Computer-based, in-person exams continue to be available at 12 locations across Michigan through Metro Institute, a private pesticide exam administration company authorized to conduct testing on MDARD’s behalf. Additionally, online exams are now available, which can be taken from your home or office if you have a computer with reliable internet service, a moveable camera (laptop or plug-in) and a microphone. To schedule a computer-based exam with Metro Institute, please click HERE or call 877-533-2900. Metro Institute charges $55 per exam at testing centers and $65 per exam when taken online. This fee is in addition to the application fee provided to MDARD.

Paper-based Exams: At this time, MDARD is unsure when in-person exam administration will resume. When that does happen, availability will be extremely limited due to social distancing and staffing limitations. In the long term, MDARD plans to permanently reduce the number of in-person sessions with the introduction of online exams and Metro Institute’s testing centers, which offer more flexible dates and times for testing than MDARD is able to offer.
